Most of my working life I have only needed four hours sleep a night with a ten or twelve hour catch up sleep every so often to keep me in balance.

As I commented two weeks ago I slept for four hours a night because my view of sleep was that it was a wasteful activity. Sleeping too long was something that robbed me of time and made my days shorter. I had so much to do and I have always been extremely passionate about my work.

As quality research continues to be published about the ill effects on our bodies brought on by the lack of sleep, I have run some test patterns on myself over the past year. The results of these tests have all been very similar.

How to Sleep Better Naturally

Over the past few years I have enjoyed engaging in body detox and fasting sessions over seven day periods run by a good friend Michael Massey in Thailand. These annual sessions have been rejuvenating and relaxing.

Two weeks ago I started fasting two days each week, however, not consecutive days. Research has shown that regular fasting days each week not only assist in weight control, it also gives you more energy and allows your body to detoxify. Drinking four litres of water and herb tea without the addition of sugar or honey during the day is essential. Also, a must is starting each day with a large glass of water with a liberal quantity of fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice added flushes the liver.

On the fasting days I have two eggs in the morning with some fresh herbs from our vegetable patch and a small garden salad at lunch time.

This past Monday was a fasting day for me. At the start of the day on rising my weight was 87.1kg. At bed time my weight was 87.7kg. After sleeping 8.5 hours on Monday night, my Tuesday morning weight was 85.7, I was energised to start my day and calm.

Over the past year I have run different scenarios from time to time with the length of time I have slept at night and weighing myself. For example, with only 4 or 5 hours sleep my weight can be 87.8kg, and then sleeping an extra 2 or 3 hours, my weight can be 1kg to 2kg less.

Why the change? With insufficient sleep the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis which causes the hormone cortisol to be released does not shut down. The extra sleep allows the body to turn off the cortisol production and your body goes into a detox mode and weight reduction is the outcome.

I’m now in the grove and these fasting days are becoming a joy. You might want to give it a go. Plan your fasting days so they support your life style, not conflict with it.

The guest speaker at our Logan Chamber of Commerce breakfast yesterday used the Charles Darwin quote to start and finish her presentation.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

I thought the quote was very fitting in a world being ravaged by stress.

If you are stressed, you need to be responsive to change now.
