Most of us don’t realise that that only 9% of the nerves in the human body are sensory nerves, i.e. they record pain and sensation that we feel.

Many victims of deadly heart attacks have had no pain or symptoms prior to the massive attack that stops them ‘dead in their tracks’, and kills them. How fortunate they would have been if that had previously experienced heart pain.

Stress is cumulative in the body, and the toxic build-up of stress, is for many, a recipe for nasty things to come.

It reminds me of the beautiful polished timber floor boards in a house that always look so nice, until disaster strikes. The home owner is walking across his elevated veranda one afternoon and as his left heal strikes the veranda floor it just keeps going and crashes through the floor. What have always been pristine looking floor boards on top, have actually been steadily eaten away by white ants underneath.

What can look good and feel good one day, can prove to be a disaster the next.

My great friend Anthony whom I walk Mt Coot-tha with three times a week, had a close shave with death a few months ago when he was struck down with stomach cancer. He was outwardly fit and well, exercised, ate the best of food, a home vege garden, chooks, a person of very positive mindset.

With the pace of business and life, the odd minor twitches of stomach pain he had experienced in the months preceding his rude awakening, he had put this down to stress. He exhibited the typical male behaviour of ‘suck it up buttercup’, and got on with his life.

The past few weeks since returning to work, Anthony has steadily increased his exercise, is eating well again, is back to enjoying his food. However, in his endeavour to catch up lost time he started  working several nights a week to 1am in the morning. He has returned to what another friend calls, ‘his work identity’. Why has he done this? He loves what he does and he is highly committed to his clients.

The thing that Anthony had not realised, and this is a common belief throughout the community, is that if we are feeling great outwardly, then everything internally, ‘has returned to normal’!!

The body takes time to heal, and even more so from a life threatening near death episode of something like cancer.

You always need to allow the body extra time to heal internally. Exercise is very important in the healing process, as is rest, additional sleep and good food and hydration. Practicing stress reduction tools is also a key in supporting you to take control of the ‘white ants’ who are active once again under the floor boards in your life.
